Succession
Succession is a very cool process that in basic of terms, resets the environment after a disaster or initiates the building of a new environment. Succession is a crucial element of life. Without it natural disasters could obliterate entire areas and ruin that land forever. As seen in the picture above, you can see that the bare land goes through stages of succession in which turning that land into grasses then shrubs the trees and then proceeds to large trees. Now imagine that, with an entire forest.
The island of Krakatoa had a series amount of succession in order to restore the little life capable of living on the island. Although, there is big discussion on whether the island received primary or secondary succession. The island appearing to be wipeout out, must have received primary succession right? Maybe. Researchers studied the island immediately following the catastrophe, and found a single spider, spinning its web in hopes of catching a fly. Within months an abundance of life appeared no doubt to the fact that a small spider army appeared from the flies. Theories of possible reasons in which that spider got there are things such as, he was on an object floating on the ocean and landed on the island, or it was caught on a bird and fell of when the bird landed on the island, or the spider might have been buried in a crevice and wasn't injured bad enough to be killed. The conflict is that researches dont know if the plants and life they found were considered survivors of the disaster or if they appeared after, due to primary succession.
The climax species of the island were the casuarina tree, and the primary species was just simple ferns found around the island.
